Recoleta Cultural Life

Dear friends of Jujuy:

Recoleta has several cultural centres comprising two museums, several art galleries, and an important Arts & Crafts Fair. This is how Nora Hochbaum, director of the Recoleta Cultural Centre, describes it. Haute couture stores, international fashion boutiques, restaurants and bars of outstanding level add to the rich cultural and social life in this neighbourhood.
In Recoleta you can find one of the most famous cemeteries in Argentina. History and art come together in the aisles of the Recoleta Cemetery. Amongst the most relevant personalities buried here are Eva Peron, Adolfo Bioy Casares and Facundo Quiroga.

Some blocks away from the cemetery is The National Library, the most important library in Argentina and one of the most important ones in America. It has within its collection one of the best-known bibliographical sources in Latin America. The current building was inaugurated in 1992. The library had three different previous locations, including the Cabildo and a luxurious building in San Telmo where Jorge Luis Borges was its director. The present building was designed by Clorindo Testa, is the renowned architect.

Palais de Glace is a French style palace that now works as an exhibition space. In its beginnings it was an ice-skating rink; later it became an elegant ballroom to dance tango.

The Museum of Fine Arts was created in 1896 and it is one of the most important museums in Latin America. The centre hosts international masterpieces by Goya, El Greco, Tintoretto, Van Gogh, Picasso, Kandinsky and Miro as well as Argentine art pieces from the 20th century, such as those of Ernesto de la Carcova, Candido Lopez and Prilidiano Pueyrredon.
